"This is where we are now then: a collection of separate business concepts and enabling technologies, that encourage user/customer participation, whose attributes overlap with one another to a significant extent.
I have given some thought as to whether they can be labelled collectively as a group. While there is no single word that can take in all of them (’masspeercustomizationcommonsmarketplace’ doesn’t roll off the tongue!), my personal opinion is that there is one word to describe a series of ideas that empower the customer with a greater level of participation in deciding how products are designed and how they are produced.
It has been used before in a couple of places, more so to describe the general growth of consumer power, rather than in the context I am describing here. However, “..isms” generally refer to a collection of ideas, so it seems appropriate to use it for this purpose.
It’s called ‘Customerism’."
