"Dave’s brother/partner, Matt, started Woot.com in Dallas, Texas while Dave was in college. At that time, he sold blocks of four or five thousand items which were sold one by one to wholesale retailers. In 1998, he wanted to start selling to consumers without being “just another store” that would compete with everybody else.
While Matt was trying to figure that out, Dave and his friend Luke started a blog where they posted things that they found on the internet. Everyday, they would post a story, and they started to get a pretty good following where a few thousand people would visit the site.
It was at this time that Dave's brother came up with the idea to create a store that was similar to what Dave and Luke’s site was doing. In this site, like in a blog, they post a new item everyday that brings people in to see what it is. Throwing out the original cheesy advert hype, they replace it with a creative commentary about the item which would include a song composed specifically for that product.
With a daily stock of two to ten thousand items, they sell out of their product two thirds of the time. Randomly throughout the year, and especially at Christmas time, they clear their shelves by selling grab bags for $1 with assorted goodies from the year."
